If these workers have “made it” to high ranking positions, particularly if they are immigrants, their success relative to previous generations may mask the ways racial inequalities structure their laborforce outcomes. Conversely, these workers may, like their black American counterparts, become attuned to other racialized processes in the labor force, particularly if they hit a glass ceiling, face negative stereotypes from customers, colleagues, and/or supervisors, or experience marginalization and isolation in the work environment.
7 percent of black women never marry, their work in professional occupations where black men are increasingly becoming underrepresented may be negatively correlated with marriage. Future research can and should also continue to assess the ways race and gender intersect to shape black professional women’s work experiences. Existing studies point to the ways harassment, hiring, and building key social networks are shaped by race and gender.
